If you’re looking for something to lift your spirits, these five pieces will do the trick.
All of them were created before the pandemic hit the U.S., yet the wisdom of each one can be easily plucked out and applied to the struggles and fears that we’re dealing with now.
1. The podcast episode
Reply All “#158 The Case of the Missing Hit”
This is a charming story (that ended up being a huge hit in the podcast world) about a man who’s determined to find the name of a ’90s song that’s stuck in his head—and the podcast co-host who goes on a mission to find the answer for him. It’s endearing, family-friendly and gives perspective on the music industry right before the internet craze.
2. The book
The Upside of Being Down by Jen Gotch
Jen Gotch is the founder of Ban.do, which sells bright, sunshiny clothing, stationery (I’ve been using their planners for years), accessories and more. Her book feels like a chat with your wise, kooky, brilliant friend who has the best perspective on everything from crying at work to dealing with a mental illness to creating a business that brings people a ton of joy.
3. The film
The Farewell
This beautiful, funny story, directed by Lulu Wang, may not seem uplifting at first glance. It stars Billi (an amazing Awkwafina), who goes back home to see her grandmother in China with her family. Her grandmother is dying and, to Billi’s dismay, her family has decided not to tell her.
I found it moving for so many reasons: from the exploration of differences (and similarities) between western and eastern cultures to the amazing cast (Wang had to fight to keep the cast authentic to her story and for them to speak Mandarin) to the intertwining moments of grief and humor that are so authentic to how life can be.
BTW, a great podcast episode to follow the film: “What You Don’t Know” from This American Life, where Wang tells the story that inspired the film.
4. The TED Talk
“What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness” by Robert Waldinger
Robert Waldinger is a researcher for one of the longest-running studies on human happiness. He reveals the main thing that leads to a more joyful life—and how it can have a positive impact on our health, including the sharpness of our minds as we get older. I get teary every time I listen!
5. 2 tools for managing anxiety
from actor & comedian Bill Hader
I just recently discovered the awesomeness that is the “introverted and modest” Bill Hader. This video he created for the Child Mind Institute is such a wonderful, brave and vulnerable thing to do. If you tend to get anxious and nervous at times (hello!), you’ll love the two tools he uses to manage anxiety. His advice for kids is just as helpful for adults.
What have you read, watched or listened to lately that gave you a mood boost? Or that made you feel a sense of comfort? I’d love to hear your recs in the comments. Sending lots of sunshine vibes your way. xoxo
P.S. I wanted to create an at-home playlist (or on-your-commute playlist if you’re an essential worker) with a mix of tunes that would make you want to get up and dance… and also pause and feel the feels (because no one can feel joyful all the time). Here it is, in case you’d like to take a listen.
P.P.S. Another thing I’m finding uplifting right now? This pretty Cardea AuSet Calm Mood Mist (pictured at top). I got it in my spring Causebox. It smells like walking through a field of lavender, plus the brand is female-founded and their products are plant-based. ::chef’s kiss:: 💗
