Earlier this year, my plan was to ārelaunchā Galbraith with a special letter to you about a challenge I took on last springāand how itās changed the direction of this site.
The challenge is to only purchase clothing made from sustainable fabrics, like linen, organic cotton or recycled materials. (Iāll go more into the details of the challenge and how I made it my own in an upcoming post.)
Then the coronavirus crisis happened and I felt that perhaps some people arenāt thinking so much about shoppingāor what fabrics are more earthy-friendly than others.
Hereās the thing though: Shopping in a mindful way brings me joy. (I thought you might feel the same way, too!) And we could all use a little joy right now, especially when itās combined with taking better care of ourselves and our planet.
Starting with this post, the Style section of Galbraith will focus on clothing made by conscious brands (including small and female-lead businesses) that create styles using sustainable fabrics.
To kick off this new direction on Galbraith, here are a handful of cozy sweatshirts (my go-to at home right now) thatāll give you all the feel-good vibes. š
1. Pact | Essential Sweatshirt
Pact is my go-to for basics, from underwear to joggers, even my duvet cover. This sweater comes in a ton of fun colors and itās made with 100% organic cotton. (Also: Itās on sale!) (Curious about why organic cotton is better? This article goes into the negative impact different fabrics, including regular cotton, have on the environment.)
2. Reformation | Hunter Sweatshirt
This cute cropped number is from the OG of cool sustainable style. (Leave it to Reformation to make a sweatshirt sexy.) Itās made from organic cotton, recycled cotton and Tencel modal. (Recycled fabrics often mean less energy was used to create a piece of clothing. Good On You is a company that rates fashion brands on their sustainability: here are their thoughts on Tencel.)
3. Everlane | ReNew Fleece Raglan Sweatshirt (also pictured at top)
This fuzzy sweater is repurposed from plastic bottles (which makes it recycled polyester*). I love the styleāitās slightly cropped, roomy, but not oversized. I had to include it even though there are only a few sizes left. (*As a note: Researchers are finding synthetic fibers, like polyester, in our waterways and inside fish and other animals, eek! For recycled polyester, the safest bet is to purchase it sparingly and, if possible, to wash it with a GuppyFriend washing bag. You can read more about the effects of polyester and other microplastics on the environment here, if youād like.)
4. Mate | Vintage Pullover
Iām pretty obsessed with Mateās simple, beautiful (and oh-so-soft) styles. Theyāre a bit of a splurge (sometimes I wait for a sale, eep!). But Iāve found the quality to be so worth it. This sweatshirt is made with 100% organic cotton. Also: Mate is female-founded & based in L.A. Woot woot!
5. For Days | For Better Days Vintage Sweatshirt
For Days has a really cool business model: purchase their sustainable styles, wear them until theyāre worn out (or you donāt want anymore) and then send them back and For Days will recycle them for you. Theyāre creating a way to minimize your closet and keep clothing out of landfills. Itās a win-win! Love the message on this organic cotton sweatshirt.
Shopping more sustainably can seem complicated. My goal is to simplify it, even just a little bit, for you.
While itās something Iām passionate about, thereās still so much Iām learning, too. Thatās why Iām super excited to have you join me on this journey.
If youāre already shopping sustainably, what brands are you loving? Feel free to share in the comments below.
Hope youāre having a peaceful day. xoxo, Heather
P.S. Iāll always be clear if Iām working with a brand and content is sponsored. None of these brands or styles are sponsored, I just think theyāre amazing and wanted to share them with you :)
