There’s nothing like making last minute after-work plans only to realize what you’re wearing isn’t quite going out material. Unless your job has an artsy/relaxed vibe, it can be tricky to dress cool enough for drinks with friends, but also appropriate enough to be taken seriously.
I was lucky enough to work with my dear friend Mitch, an amazing photographer, on this post (follow him on Instagram here). He’s an incredibly creative person and I had so much fun shooting with him.
Day
It does involve a little planning, i.e. packing another jacket, different jewelry and a clutch in your work bag or storing it at your desk, but it’s really easy to switch up:
★ Take off the scarf and blazer and replace them with an edgy jacket (like the faux leather one below).
★ Wear a fitted v-neck. Save your button ups for another day and keep it simple with a dark-colored v-neck under the blazer. Cover up at work with the scarf and then without it you have a sexier look for a date or catching up with friends. Try these luxe, inexpensive tees here and here.
★ Let your hair down. No clips, bobby pins - just let loose! To boost your hair’s volume and give it a bit of curl, try braiding it while it’s wet in the morning before work. Then take out the braid and hairspray before heading for the bar. You’ll have pretty, beachy waves! If you don’t have time for that, try using a comb (or grab a pen from your desk and use the blunt end) to change the side your part is on - voila! A new look.
★ Put on a piece of glitzy statement jewelry - something eye-catching and fun, like this. I added some color with beaded bracelets too.
★ Try to avoid carrying your work bag. I’ve brought the Madewell tote above (which I love) out for drinks after work - not so fun. It’s just too big and clunky for a crowded bar. Plus, I feel like I’m still at work when I’m wearing it. Keep a clutch at your desk or pop it into your bag before you head to work - the simpler the color, the more it will go with everything. Two picks: here and here.
Night
Now, how about some margaritas?
I hope these photos give you a bit of inspiration - and save you a trip home after work to change. More time for happy hour!
