5 Ways to Update Your Look Without Spending a Dime

January 19, 2017 Heather Furlow

It's a tough time of year in a lot of ways. The holidays feel like ages ago, it gets dark super early, and we have some serious stuff happening in our country tomorrow and this weekend (i.e. a new president and marches, marches, marches!). So that means (to me) now is the time to focus and revel in the little things. The details. Here, you'll find five ways to add new details to your everyday look—without dropping any of your hard-earned cash or traveling further than your own closet. Whether you're into bold changes or subtle ones, there's a tip here for you.

1. Be a Wrap Star

i-qcj3FB3-XL.jpg

What you'll need: a silky scarf, bandanna, ribbon, fabric belt, or handkerchief
Boldness level: 4 out of 5
How to pull it off: The simpler your outfit is when you're wearing a bright scarf around your neck (or on your wrist), the better. Go for neutral colors and let the scarf be the star pop of color. You'll turn heads, I promise!

2. Switch It Up

What you'll need: a button-up or cardigan
Boldness level: 5 out of 5
How to pull it off: I'm a huge fan of structured mens'-style button-ups. Try buttoning your top about halfway up your back and add a long necklace to draw the eye there. You could also add a pin to the front of the button up (er, the back I mean, like I did in the very top photo) and cuff the sleeves as high as you can. You want it to look intentional (duh) not like you rushed out of the house without realizing your shirt is on the wrong way (😂). Another option is wearing your fave cardigan backwards. The biggest issue with a low-cut V at your back: to wear a bra or not to wear a bra? I know going braless isn't an option for everyone—or one that everyone's comfortable with. So if it isn't gonna work for you, no worries. It'll look just as edgy with a bralette poking out. Or button up your cardigan in front, like I did above, and wear it alone as a top. All of a sudden the basic, essential wardrobe staple takes on a sexy vibe. Zhush up your hair a bit and you're all set for a night out.

3. Right Hair, Right Now

What you'll need: bobby pins, hairspray, a good topknot guide (unless you're a boss and you've already got it down, if not, I love this one), a comb to create a part, etc.
Boldness level: 1 out of 5
How to pull it off: The idea here is to give your everyday hairstyle a rest (even just for one day a week). If you're like me, you probably wear your hair about the same every day (🙋🏼). Maybe you always part it in the middle. Or you always wear it up in a messy bun. Now's the time to try something new. It doesn't have to be something that takes a lot of effort, like a braided crown (although they do look amazing!). I remember I wore my hair in a topknot to work once, and my boss didn't recognize me at first! (Can you tell I literally have an "everyday" hairstyle?!) It's a little energy boost to switch up your hairstyle (or look in general), even in a really small way. It could be as easy as making a deep side part and going for that sexy, hair-over-one eye look. Although, a girl needs to see, so grab a few bobby pins in case you decide to switch it up midday—try simply pinning your hair back on one side of your part.

4. Dressed to a Tee

What you'll need: an oversized tee, preferably one with a bit of attitude on the front or a fun graphic that matches your personality, but it can also be a deliciously plain white one
Boldness level: 2 out of 5
How to pull it off: Roll up the sleeves, then either tie at the waist or tuck it into a skirt or dressy pair of pants for a cool understated look. My favorite weekend outfit is a t-shirt paired with skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans. The easiest thing ever.

5. One Fine Fray

What you'll need: Scissors, tweezers, and a pair of jeans you don't mind messing with
Boldness level: 3 out of 5
How to pull it off: Take the jeans and DIY your own frayed hems. (Two easy how-tos, here and here.) Then wear with your fave sneakers, flats, or booties.

Much love to you this week. Be kind to yourself!

Xoxo, Heather

2018 has been a year of celebrating love and friendship. 💗 Some of my favorite people tied the knot. (I went to five weddings, three that I was in.) I saw dear friends and loved ones more often, made new friends and reconnected with old ones. I saw my gorgeous sister walk down the aisle (on the beach in Turks & Caicos 😎🏝) and I gained a new brother. 👋🏼
•
I explored Paris and southern France for the first time with my ❤️. (Oh and we also climbed this little mountain 👆🏼 in the Adirondacks and just sat and watched the mist drift over the mountaintop for what felt like hours... so peaceful. 😍)
•
I got really into wide-leg jeans, scrunchies and Rent the Runway. 🤗
• ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started meditating more seriously—my best streak was 107 days in a row. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
•
This was also the year where a lot of anxiety and doubt took up space in my head—or maybe I just became more aware of it. (Meditation really does help.) Being aware of the doubt and anxiety is the first step for me, then comes the working through it part. 🧜🏼‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•
I’ve set aside some time with @tomschellingphoto to plan out my goals for this year (he’s great at that goal-setting stuff 😋) and I’m really excited to tackle a few things I’ve been too afraid to pursue. 💪🏼
•
I hope you make time to reflect on this past year too—the good, the bad, the everything! Whether you realize it or not, you’ve accomplished and learned an incredible amount. Cheers to 2019 being our best year yet, my friends! 🥂
When @tomschellingphoto wants to test a new lens, even though it’s cold and raining out... 😋😂 P.S. Clear umbrellas are the best 🙏🏼
Soaking in those last few minutes before leaving Turks & Caicos yesterday. I’m realizing escaping to the Caribbean (or somewhere warm) is the best way to break up New York winters. 😎✌🏼☀️
My bestest friend in the whole wide 🌎 got married! 🎉💍🥰
